How to Burn a Soy Candle (So It Lasts)

How to Burn a Soy Candle (So It Lasts)

A hand-poured soy candle rewards a little care. These five habits help every MoonAura candle burn cleanly and last as long as possible.

1. Make the first burn count

Let the first burn run until the melted wax reaches the edge of the jar — usually 2–3 hours. Soy wax has a "memory": if you blow it out early, it will keep tunnelling down the middle.

2. Trim the wick every time

Trim cotton wicks to about 5 mm before each burn. For wooden wicks, gently snap off the charred tip. A short wick means a calmer flame and no soot.

3. Keep burns under four hours

After about four hours the wick can mushroom and the jar gets hot. Blow it out, let it cool, trim, and relight.

4. Mind the draughts

Open windows, fans and doorways make the flame flicker and burn unevenly. Choose a still spot on a heat-safe surface.

5. Know when to stop

Stop burning when about 1 cm of wax is left in the bottom. Then clean out the jar with warm soapy water — it makes a lovely small vase or pot.

And always: never leave a burning candle unattended. Explore our candles.
