If you've ever wondered why so many small-batch candle makers use soy wax, you're not alone. Here's a clear, simple look at how soy wax and paraffin wax compare, and why we chose soy for our hand-poured candles.
Where each wax comes from
Soy wax is made from soybean oil, a plant-based and renewable source. Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum refining. Both are widely used, but they behave differently in a candle.
How they burn
Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin, so it tends to burn more slowly and evenly in a container. That means you often get more hours from the same size of candle, as long as you look after it. Paraffin candles can burn faster and hotter.
How they hold scent
Paraffin is known for a strong scent throw. Soy gives a softer, more gentle fragrance that fills a room without feeling overpowering, which is exactly the feel we want for our candles.
Cleaning up
Because soy is softer, any spills clean up easily with warm, soapy water. Once your candle is finished, you can clean out the jar and reuse it for small plants, pens or makeup brushes.
How to get the best from a soy candle
- Let the first burn reach the edges of the jar to avoid tunnelling.
- Trim the wick to about 5 mm before every burn.
- Burn for no more than four hours at a time.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Frequently asked questions
Do soy candles last longer?
Soy wax usually burns more slowly than paraffin in a container candle, so you often get more hours from the same size, especially if you trim the wick and avoid very long burns.
Why does my soy candle look frosty?
A light white bloom on the surface is a natural feature of soy wax. It doesn't affect how your candle burns.
Can I reuse the jar?
Yes. Once the wax is finished, clean the jar with warm, soapy water and reuse it for plants, pens or small storage.
